The Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia, fired a NASA rocket into the night sky, dazzling night owls along the mid-Atlantic coast.

According to a tweet from the Wallops facility, the sounding rocket blasted off at midnight. Weather allowing, the launch was expected to be visible from North Carolina to southern New York.

According to a press release, scientists are hoping that the rocket will provide new information on the origin of soft X-rays, which they say "hurtle toward Earth from elsewhere in our galaxy."
